Soil Mixes

The Secret is in the Substrate

I do not use standard potting soil. The trees in my studio grow in my bespoke substrates.When plants struggle with overwatering,  it's because their roots can't get enough oxygen.
My mixes hold enough water to keep your plants well-hydrated with constant aeration.

All my substrates are sifted to remove fines and dust before being mixed by hand.

Ingredients

Coconut Coir:
A sustainable material that provides stable moisture retention and resists breaking down

Green Zeolite:
A mineral with great exchange capacity,  providing a reliable battery of moisture and nutrients

Black Lava Rock:
A jagged mineral that introduces aeration and encourages the branching of feeder roots

Coarse Perlite:
A lightweight volcanic amendment that keeps training soils aerated and prevents compaction

Treated Fir Bark:
A decomposition resistant amendment which maintains stable soil moisture and acidity

From routine maintenance and root trims to complete nursery material transformations,  we'll explore the bonsai methods we use to achieve our horticultural and artistic goals.

All are welcome,  from total beginners and houseplant enthusiasts to bonsai collectors!
Bring your own tree(s) for the workshop,  or purchase a new pre-bonsai here.

We'll closely inspect your tree and diagnose artistic and horticultural considerations.
Then I'll help you decide on a future vision for the tree and we'll get to the execution.

About the Artist

Chaos Bonsai began as a passion project with the goal of inspiring people to appreciate the beauty of nature.I was stuck in a small,  shaded townhouse and needed to find a way to bring my passion of growing plants to life in a big way.

I started in hydroponics,  vegetables,  and houseplants,  running out of room.But then I turned to bonsai,  putting to use my background in engineering and chemistry to craft a high-performance grow lab.

Today I fill my days bringing to life projects some once called "impossible".And since I've finally cracked the code of growing tiny trees in your home, 
I want to share this gift with you.

Tropical Care Guide

Cultivation,  Not Calendars

 
Bonsai is a dynamic horticultural art. Because your tree lives in a small pot with limited resources, it relies entirely on you to read its environment.

Ditch the calendar. Watering on a fixed timeline is the fastest way to kill most tropical plants. No more "Watering Tuesdays".Instead, use this observant approach to keep your tree locked in peak health.
 

💧 Water

Check on your plants regularly and inspect the surface of their soil. If it looks black,  wet,  and shiny,  skip watering. Roots grow best in consistent wet-dry cycles.Keep an eye out for the point when the soil surface of your plants loses its sheen and starts to lighten in color . The minerals may become chalky looking, but the mix isn't yet completely brown. This is the perfect time to water.You can also use weight to gauge a plant's water saturation. Water when the pot weighs about half as much as it did when it was fully saturated.Avoid letting plants dry out completely tan brown unless they are succulent.Using a watering can or the sink, gently and evenly water the soil surface to runoff. Avoid displacing the soil with strong blasts of water.To avoid disrupting oxygen exchange and causing root rot,  drain excess standing water from trays or dishes promptly.

☀️ Energy

It's important to position your plant so that it can capture the most energy possible. In most cases,  you should try to maximise the daily exposure to light energy your plant receives.South: Ideal conditions. Full light exposure.
West: Good conditions. Afternoon light and heat.
East: Poor conditions. Cold,  some morning light.
North: Impossible conditions. Supplemental lighting needed.Grow lights are generally recommended for all indoor growing in addition to sunlight,  and improve outcomes dramatically.Plants are phototropic -- they grow toward the light source. Rotate the plant 180° every week so that their energy is distributed evenly.Maintain temperatures between 16°C to 28°C. Shield your plants from drafts and HVAC vents.

🚦 Gas & Brake

High-performance aerated substrates are a chemical blank slate. Your tree's soil surface only has enough slow-release nutricote to feed it for up to three months.After that, you need to refuel, either by slow-release or liquid:Slow release: Top-dress the soil with slow-release prills according to package directions. Nutricote T100 with micronutrients is highly recommended.Liquid-Feed: Water with a liquid fertilizer according to package directions during active growth only. Never feed a bone-dry substrate; rehydrate it first.

Hitting the brakes:
Tropicals love to pump energy to their outer tips,  especially at the top.
To maintain vascular health,  let new shoots extend to 4–5 leaf pairs.Then make cut each shoot back to 1-2 leaf pairs,  right above a leaf node.
The direction the remaining leaf points dictates the trajectory of the tree's new shoots. The apex of your tree will probably need more aggressive thinning.

🛡️ Security

Keep the soil surface free of debris. Fallen leaves block surface-level air exchange and create a nesting ground for fungi and bacteria.Indoor plants are closed systems. Without biological predators,  small pest populations can sometimes run away unchecked.Scan your plant's foliage regularly:Mites: fine webbing,  bronze patches,  black dots
Thrips: fast crawlers,  silver streaks,  yellow foliage
Aphids: honeydew,  exoskeletons,  greenish aduts
Scale: honeydew,  armored bumps,  stunted growthIf you find pests, it's recommended you clean them off with a firm, warm-temperature blast of water. This physically obliterates the pest colony and clears debris without chemical stress.

For severe infestations,  horticultural sprays may be required.

Why does your care advice contradict standard plant tags?

Standard retail tags are written for generic survival in poor quality soil,  not optimized bonsai cultivation. My soil mixes are aerated and plants respond best with regular water and feeding.


I am new to tropical shohin. Will I kill these trees?
Not if you run the protocol. Read up on my care guide above.

Is this a retail store? What are your hours?

Chaos Bonsai is NOT a retail store. It is my private horticultural laboratory and bonsai studio. I do not have public walk-in hours. Studio services and browsing is available by appointment ONLY.


Why don't you post listings of individual pieces?

Plants are living creatures and therefore are constantly evolving and changing, and as a human I cannot keep up with photographing them all. To see the latest inventory,  book a studio visit or reach out.


Can I buy your trees online and have them shipped?

No,  I do not ship live specimen trees via standard courier as it is risky and plants are easily weakened and damaged during shipping.

 

Studio Policies

Sales & Variations

All Sales Final:
Every specimen,  custom soil blend,  or workshop session purchased from Chaos Bonsai is final sale. I do not accept returns,  exchanges,  or issue refunds.Sizing References:
Any physical objects (such as mugs or tools) included in studio photography are for scale and size reference only,  and are not included with purchase unless explicitly stated otherwise.Living Art Variations:
You are purchasing a living,  evolving specimen. Natural appearance may fluctuate by season. Depending on the time of year,  a tree may present with more or fewer leaves,  structural fine-branching,  or active blooms than what is pictured in studio photos.

Plant Liability

Post-Sale Care:
Chaos Bonsai is not liable for subsequent plant decline,  dieback,  or death caused by improper handling, transportation shock,  or deviations from proper tropical care protocols.Acclimitization Time:
As living creatures,  plants need time to adapt to new conditions. Please allow plants at least three weeks to adjust before performing any work,  including pruning, wiring,  and repotting. Failing to do so may result in plant decline or death.Workshop Scope:
Studio advice offered during one-on-one workshops is pedagogical. The hands-on execution of root-work,  aggressive styling, or defoliation is performed at the buyer's own discretion regarding the long-term recovery of their tree. Basic care advice is provided free of charge,  but advanced techniques are reserved for instruction during workshop slots ONLY.

Studio Liability

Professional Tool Use:
Workshops involve the use of specialized, sharp horticultural machinery and hand tools (including but not limited to high-carbon steel shears,  branch cutters,  concave cutters,  and aluminum wire). You assume all risk of personal injury,  including cuts or punctures,  arising from the handling of these tools.Nursery Environment Hazards:
My high-density indoor cultivation laboratory utilizes specialized bright cultivation lights. Exposure to fertilizers,  consumer-grade pesticides (pyrethrin),  insects,  high humidity and temperatures (24-30°C, 80%+ RH) is possible.
You acknowledge that navigating an active nursery space carries inherent environmental risks.Release of Liability: You agree to fully release,  waive,  and hold harmless Chaos Bonsai and myself from any and all liability,  claims,  or demands for personal injury,  property damage,  or eye strain occurring during your session,  pickup,  or presence on the studio property.

Privacy Policy

Data Collected: I may collect personal data including your name,  contact phone number, email address,  and physical address for delivery.Purpose of Collection: This information is gathered strictly to book studio workshop appointments,  coordinate local pickup and delivery,  and fulfill direct service logistics.Third-Party Sharing: Your personal data is confidential. I will never sell,  trade, or share your information with any outside marketing entities or third parties. It is used solely to facilitate your direct relationship with my studio.Cookies: This site may collect technical data through Cloudflare Web Analytics for traffic and performance diagnostics. I do not use behaviour tracking or advertising cookies.Deletion: You have the right to request the update or deletion of your personal data.
